Kanaan was born and raised in Texas. He graduated from Texas A&M University in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Distribution. In 2007, he obtained his Doctorate of Jurisprudence from South Texas College of Law, where he graduated magna cum laude.

At South Texas College of Law, Kanaan served as the editor in chief of the South Texas Law Review. He made the Dean's List every semester, and he received the Dean's Citizenship Award. Kanaan was made a member of the Order of the Lytae, he received several American Jurisprudence Awards for academic excellence, and he was the recipient of academic scholarships. Kanaan is also a Texas certified mediator.
